Description

Hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) is a powerful oxidizing agent and disinfectant widely used in medicine, industry, and households. In its pure form, it is a pale blue liquid, but commercial products usually contain it diluted in water. At low concentrations (3–6%), hydrogen peroxide is commonly used as an antiseptic for wound cleaning, oral rinses, and surface disinfection. At higher concentrations, it finds industrial applications in bleaching paper, textiles, and pulp, as well as in wastewater treatment due to its strong oxidizing properties. Hydrogen peroxide decomposes naturally into water and oxygen, making it environmentally friendly compared to chlorine-based disinfectants. However, concentrated solutions can be highly reactive, causing burns or explosions if not handled properly. In the food industry, it is used for sterilizing packaging materials to ensure hygiene. Because of its light sensitivity and instability, hydrogen peroxide is usually stored in dark containers under cool conditions. Its dual role as a gentle antiseptic at low strength and a powerful industrial chemical at high strength highlights its remarkable versatility.
