Flexible PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) is a widely used thermoplastic polymer derived from vinyl chloride monomer and softened using plasticizers, such as phthalates or non-phthalate alternatives. Unlike rigid PVC, which is stiff and brittle, flexible PVC has high elasticity and can bend without breaking, making it ideal for applications that require durability and softness. With a density of about 1.2–1.35 g/cm³, it has moderate tensile strength but excellent resistance to moisture, acids, and alkalis, ensuring long service life in demanding environments. Its electrical insulation properties make it a preferred choice in wire and cable coatings, while its flexibility supports use in hoses, flooring, roofing membranes, medical tubing, and inflatable goods. Flexible PVC is inherently flame retardant due to its chlorine content, and stabilizers are added to improve UV and weather resistance. It can be processed easily through extrusion, injection molding, and calendaring, offering cost-effective production for a wide variety of products. However, concerns exist regarding its environmental impact, as plasticizers may leach and disposal poses challenges. Despite this, flexible PVC remains an indispensable material in construction, automotive, medical, and consumer applications, providing a balance of affordability, functionality, and long-term performance.
