Synthetic Rubber

Category: Elastomer / Synthetic Rubber
Base Chemical: Butadiene (C₄H₆)
Common Forms: Styrene-Butadiene Rubber (SBR), Polybutadiene Rubber (BR)
Physical State: Solid elastomer (rubber form)
Density: ~0.90–0.98 g/cm³
Tensile Strength: High (especially SBR)
Elasticity: Excellent rebound and flexibility
Hardness: Adjustable (soft to semi-rigid depending on formulation)
Abrasion Resistance: Good (BR is highly wear-resistant)
Heat Resistance: Moderate, 70–100°C working range
Cold Resistance: Good flexibility at low temperatures
Aging Resistance: Moderate, requires stabilizers
Chemical Resistance: Resistant to alcohols, weak acids, and alkalis
Oil Resistance: Poor (except for special blends)
Applications: Tires, footwear, conveyor belts, hoses, seals
Processability: Easily mixed with fillers like carbon black
Environmental Impact: Non-biodegradable, recyclable in limited ways
Flammability: Combustible, produces toxic smoke
Market Role: Backbone of global tire industry
Recycling: Crumb rubber, pyrolysis used for recovery
Global Demand: Extremely high due to automotive sector

Description

Synthetic rubber derived from butadiene is one of the most critical materials in modern industry, particularly in automotive manufacturing. The two most important types are Styrene-Butadiene Rubber (SBR) and Polybutadiene Rubber (BR). SBR is widely used in tire treads due to its excellent wear resistance, grip, and cost-effectiveness, while BR provides superior abrasion resistance, low rolling resistance, and flexibility at low temperatures, making it ideal for sidewalls and high-performance tires. Butadiene-based rubbers are also employed in footwear, conveyor belts, seals, gaskets, hoses, and industrial goods. With a density of about 0.9–0.98 g/cm³, synthetic rubber is lightweight yet durable, and its tensile strength ensures long-lasting performance under stress. However, natural drawbacks such as limited oil and heat resistance require compounding with stabilizers, fillers, and antioxidants. The environmental impact of synthetic rubber is significant, as it is non-biodegradable, though recycling methods such as crumb rubber production and pyrolysis are increasingly adopted. As the backbone of the tire industry, butadiene-derived synthetic rubber is in constant global demand, balancing performance, affordability, and adaptability for a wide range of applications.
