Description

Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) is a thermoplastic polymer made from ethylene monomers and is recognized for its flexibility, softness, and transparency. With a density range of 0.91–0.93 g/cm³, LDPE is less dense than other polyethylene types due to its highly branched molecular structure, which reduces crystallinity. It has a relatively low melting point (105–115°C) and tensile strength, making it softer but easier to process into films, sheets, and coatings. LDPE demonstrates excellent chemical resistance to acids, bases, and most solvents, and its high flexibility makes it ideal for applications like plastic bags, squeeze bottles, and wire insulation. It is also widely used in the packaging industry for film wrapping and agricultural applications. LDPE is a good electrical insulator, though it is sensitive to UV radiation and environmental stress cracking unless stabilizers are added. Classified as recycling code #4, LDPE is recyclable, although recycling rates vary globally. Despite its non-biodegradable nature, LDPE remains one of the most versatile plastics, balancing low cost, ease of processing, and functional performance. Its softness and moisture resistance continue to make it a go-to material for packaging and consumer goods worldwide.
