Description

Polypropylene (PP) is a versatile thermoplastic polymer made from propylene monomers and is one of the most widely used plastics in the world after polyethylene. Known for its high melting point (160–170°C), polypropylene offers excellent thermal resistance, making it suitable for hot-filled containers and microwave-safe products. It exists in different grades such as homopolymers and copolymers, each providing unique mechanical and processing properties. With a density of about 0.90–0.92 g/cm³, it is one of the lightest plastics available, yet it maintains good tensile strength and durability. Polypropylene resists moisture absorption, chemical attack from acids and bases, and cracking under stress, which makes it an excellent material for packaging, automotive parts, household goods, and textiles like ropes and carpets. Its transparency in thin films allows it to be used in food wraps and medical applications, while its stiffness and fatigue resistance make it ideal for hinges and reusable containers. As a recyclable polymer coded as #5 plastic, polypropylene can be repurposed into industrial and consumer goods, though it remains non-biodegradable. Overall, polypropylene resin strikes a balance between strength, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness, establishing it as a key material in manufacturing and daily use.
