Rigid Polyvinyl Chloride (Rigid PVC or uPVC) is a strong, durable thermoplastic that contains no added plasticizers, giving it a hard and rigid structure. With a density of around 1.35–1.45 g/cm³, rigid PVC is heavier than polyethylene and polypropylene, but offers excellent mechanical strength and long-term durability. It has a relatively low softening temperature (75–105°C) but maintains its rigidity under normal conditions, making it suitable for construction and infrastructure applications. Rigid PVC is widely used in pipes, fittings, window frames, doors, and building profiles due to its resistance to water, chemicals, and corrosion. Its chlorine content makes it naturally fire-resistant and self-extinguishing, a key advantage in building materials. Rigid PVC is also weather-resistant, capable of lasting over 30 years in outdoor environments with minimal degradation. It is a good electrical insulator, expanding its use in wiring conduits and protective casings. Despite being recyclable, rigid PVC poses environmental challenges due to its chlorine content and non-biodegradable nature. Nonetheless, its long service life and cost-effectiveness ensure its global dominance in construction, plumbing, and infrastructure industries. Rigid PVC remains an essential material where durability, strength, and resistance to harsh environmental factors are required.
